A getaway to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Dirk and I needed to get away at the end of last year, so we decided on Victoria Falls. It was such an amazing trip with tons of activities jam packed into four days. We stayed at the Kingdom and did our activities through Shear Water and Wild Horizons. They run a tight ship and I was so impressed by how things ran in Vic Falls. Everything scheduled ran on time and was done professionally.

On one of our first visits to see the Falls, we spotted a bride & groom on the Zambian side having wedding photos on the cliffs edge. From where we were, it looked so close to the edge it was hairy, but there was a guide with them, so I’m sure they weren’t as close as it looked. We ran to the closest point to get a few photos. I hadn’t brought along my zoom lens, so I couldn’t get a close up shot, but wouldn’t it be cool if I could find out who they were or the photographer, and they could have some photos from the other side of the cliff. :) So internet – do you know them? – it was on November 5th 2013.

The Falls gave me one of those “Wow” moments! It really is an incredible sight. When your eyes break down what you are looking at, you could spend hours just looking in awe. Then I start thinking of how it formed and the rocks that have water crashed on top of them every moment of every day. Then there’s the noise – that’s awesome! Dirk said to me that imagine the plants that grow there, they have never and will never experience silence. Made me think of how differently we can all see things, just from having a different upbringing. Those plants would go nuts (figuratively speaking) if they were replanted somewhere with no noise, because that’s all they know, and the other plants wouldn’t know why they were going nuts! Too conceptual I know, it may be my “Fine Art” education coming into play! ;)

So in a nut shell –

We went on two sunset cruises, we went on some walks and explored Vic Falls (of course Baby Bamboon was there too), we witnessed a wedding couple from across the gorge, we did the canopy tours (which is basically like a foofie slide down the gorge!-awesome!), we had high tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel (I LOVE their old world decor), went for supper at Ilala lodge & I had THE best meal EVER, we did an Elephant back safari (totally awe inspiring to be so close to these amazing creatures), we met Sylvester the Cheetah (go visit his Facebook page here), and canoeing down the Zambezi! (no photos of this unfortunately – but it was one of the best things I’ve done!) We also met some amazing people on the trip – whether it was tourists on the bus with us, the maitre d’ at Ilala Lodge, or the guides from all our activities who went above and beyond.

Next time, I will have to do white water rafting!!:)

“Traffic” on the Zambezi waters at sunset.

You knew Baby Bamboon had to make an appearance – he’s a well travelled little monkey!

Below is a series of the bride and groom – as you can see though, a zoom lens was needed :(

I told him to go jump in a lake ;)

The last morning we got up early for one last trip to see the Falls.
