Travels: Manhattan, New York

Our trip to New York was exciting, surreal and hot. When they say New York gets hot, boy, do they mean it.
We landed and were at out hotel by about 730pm & it felt like a heat wave. It was such an awesome experience being in the back of a yellow taxi, and we were driven through the city so fast, taking all the side alleys. We checked into the hotel and were both so full of adrenalin that we rushed to get the camera, and made our way to Time Square. I’ve never seen so many tourist squashed into an area at one time. Every one had a camera of some sorts, and was just standing looking at the lights as if they were in a trance.
All of a sudden, I realised we were doing the same thing. Just another annoying tourist, with a back pack and camera.

And so started our trip of New York.

We visited B&H Photo (a photographers paradise of goodies) the next day. This was kind of a dream for me as I have visited their online store, but in real life it is just so much better. For those who dont know it, it’s like the mothership of all things photography and video related. You’ve got to visit this place!;) Think of a kid in a candy shop; that was me there!:)

One of the coolest things Dirk and I could have decided to do was a bus tour of New York. Not only did it take you from place to place, but you learnt about the city as well. All the different, quirky things that we never would have found out if we had just walked the streets.

Central Park is amazing!
Grand Central is beautiful and so full of history!
The Statue of Liberty is so much more impressive in real life!
Ground Zero is interesting and touching!
Empire State building is awe-inspiring and quite mind blowing!
It’s quite a smelly city!
There are way more homeless people than I realised.
The food is expensive, and the people are quite hard.

I can see it being quite a lonely city, but it is what you make of it, and I’ve got to say that I loved the buzz – the city that never sleeps!

(If you have a moment, listen to Alicia Keys lyrics for ‘New York’. It is exactly what it’s like.)

PS. My apologies for the lack of posts, my computer crashed so editing and blogging has been a real challenge. Once it’s up and running, I will have much more regular posts.

Awesome photos. I was just in New York as well and it’s interesting to see what shots you took. I too visited B&H but was a little disappointed and with tax things weren’t that much cheaper than back in SA.
